New Roots, New Routes
If you’ve been with me for a while — thank you for walking with me. If you’re new — I’m so glad you’re here.
The last time I wrote here was in January, when the year felt wide open and the calendar was still fresh. Since then, my life has shifted — quite literally. I moved. I live now in upstate New York, in the woods, where the air smells of pine after rain and the night sky feels impossibly close. My neighbors are deer, owls, and the occasional fox.
But this move isn’t just about geography. It’s about returning.
I was born here. Both sides of my family migrated here between the 1930s and 1950s, leaving the South in search of something better. This is where they built their lives; where their histories still ripple through the streets, even when the city itself has tried to forget. It’s where most of my family still lives.
Coming back has been a reclamation: of space, of time, of story. It’s been about grounding myself in the place that made me, even as I reimagine what that place can become.
Time, Space, and Afrofuturism
Living here has stretched my sense of time. Days move slower, yet somehow hold more. Space is not just square footage, it’s the mental and spiritual room I’ve been reclaiming.
That, to me, is Afrofuturism at its core: the refusal to accept time and space as fixed. In this city, I can walk through centuries in an afternoon — from the histories embedded in the soil to the speculative futures I dream while watching the light shift through the trees.
A Note for Legacy Weavers Lab Readers
Earlier this year, I made the decision to sunset Legacy Weavers Lab. In the final LWL email, I shared that I’d be moving my work here, and that I’d be importing the subscriber list so you wouldn’t miss the transition.
If you’ve come here from that space, welcome. You are part of the throughline. And if this new direction isn’t for you, you are always free to unsubscribe — no hard feelings, truly. My hope is that you’ll stay, explore, and see where this next chapter leads.
What This Space Is (and What It Isn’t)
Wayfinder+ is my public newsletter and update space — a kind of digital bulletin board. It’s where I’ll share:
- Announcements about new projects
- Invitations to events and workshops
- Updates on what’s unfolding in my work
- Links to new talks, features, and exhibitions
- Notes on teaching, speaking, and community offerings
This is not where the deep writing lives.
That kind of work — the layered essays, private podcast episodes, behind-the-scenes process, and personal storytelling — lives on my Substack, Electric Relaxation. That’s the space where I stretch out, experiment, and reflect. If this site is the map, then Electric Relaxation is the listening room.
I’ll be sharing more updates soon as projects begin to bloom — some are almost ready, others are still seeds.
If you want to support the work, you can do so here — there are tiers, but you never have to pay to stay connected. And if you’d simply like to drop a little something my way as a thank-you, that’s always welcome. Your presence matters just as much as any contribution.
We’ve got new routes to chart together. I’m glad you’re here for the journey.
What’s coming next lives at the intersection of memory and imagination — rooted in the archive, blooming into the speculative. Stay tuned.
